Personal Info

Jeremy is a senior member of Benjafield & Associates and works with clients who need legal advice before a decision becomes harder to unwind. That may involve a property transaction, family law issue, estate question, litigation concern, insolvency pressure, commercial agreement, lease, guardianship document, or business matter that is starting to move faster than the client would like. The useful part of the role is not simply knowing which area of law applies, it is knowing what to ask first. Has anything been signed? Is there a deadline? Has the other side sent a letter? Is money about to move? Has someone already replied? Are there documents sitting somewhere that need to be kept, copied, or checked before anyone says more? Those questions can change the matter entirely. Jeremy helps clients get from the foggy version of the problem to a cleaner working version. What is urgent? What is emotional noise? What needs evidence? What can wait? What should not be touched yet? What might cost more if handled too casually? That kind of advice is especially important in a suburban multi-practice firm, where clients rarely arrive with problems that fit one perfect label. A family matter can involve property. A business issue can involve insolvency. An estate matter can involve litigation. A lease issue can become a commercial dispute. Clients should not have to diagnose all of that before speaking to a lawyer.

Jeremy’s approach is steady, practical and direct. The aim is to help clients understand their position, the likely pathways, and the risk attached to the next step. Not to make every matter sound bigger or rush people into formal action. But to give the problem enough legal structure that the next decision can be made with care. That is the kind of senior legal presence clients need when the matter feels personal, commercial, urgent, all three at once. A good senior lawyer should not make the client perform certainty. They should help build it. Sometimes that begins with checking the documents. Sometimes it begins with asking why the client feels pressured to act today. Sometimes it begins by saying the uncomfortable thing plainly: wait, respond differently, gather evidence, or stop relying on what someone else has told you.

Jeremy helps clients with problems ranging from the theoretical to the pressingly urgent.

Having worked for many years in a range of matters involving litigation and insolvency, Jeremy applies his experience in these areas to every matter, giving the client the benefit of insight into how a seemingly unrelated problem like family law or a family provision claim might raise questions of insolvency or present a heightened risk of extensive and expensive litigation if not handled correctly. When first speaking with a client, Jeremy takes care to identify what that client is trying to achieve. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach appropriate to legal practice, and Jeremy understands that the client’s circumstances and desired outcome must be carefully considered in tailoring advice.

Jeremy has spent several years working in both France and China, including for regional and provincial governments and organisations. Holding a Masters degree in International Affairs, and having practical experience working with people from a range of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Jeremy is capable of navigating complex disputes with a sensitivity for a client’s needs, whether these involve the need to maintain underlying relationships with opposing parties, for example, or requiring knowledge of certain cultural practices or expectations.

Jeremy takes pride not just in solving problems, but in understanding and relating to each client on a personal level, because practising law is about helping people, first and foremost.
